Ben Cliff takes the plaudits and rightly so, for his monumental effort in taking 11 wickets for 105 runs. In so doing, he became the first Yorkshire player to enjoy a ten wicket match for the county at Headingley since Graham Stevenson in 1980.
When you think of the outstanding bowlers this county has produced since then, that is a huge feather in the cap of the young man from Halifax and understandably, he described it as being all a bit surreal. Let’s hope he, and we, get used to it.
True, he’ll still be the junior partner in the club’s current seam bowling cohort in the short term but he should be sky high with confidence now and the Tykes have another worthy new ball bowler in their ranks. Who says he can’t force himself up the pecking order? If you want to win titles you need options and Ben really has held his hand up but at the same time he’s keeping his feet on the ground.
