About

The 21st Century has seen many changes to how we consume media. The dawn of the internet and prevalence of social media quickly rendered some aspects of industry difficult to justify commercially. When Yorkshire County Cricket Club men’s head coach Anthony McGrath made his debut as a player for the club in 1995, the coverage of county cricket was thriving.

Local newspapers carried regular reports, news and features, and there were a host of national correspondents present at each County Championship match.

Fast forward three decades and things have changed significantly. Column inches on county cricket are now few and far between. Football is seen as king.

BBC Radio Leeds still does an excellent job providing commentaries and its Cricket Show, the Yorkshire Post with its regional written coverage likewise. However, like so many media outlets, both face their own challenges in terms of the time and resources they are able to devote to Yorkshire cricket.

The aim of White Rose Files is to be a hub of written, audio and visual coverage of Yorkshire County Cricket Club and the wealth of league cricket in the county. It will include contributions from journalists, players, club members and supporters. It will also include a podcast and, going forward, events.

There’ll be coverage of the here and now, analysis, previews, interviews, features, as well as historic pieces for those who enjoy some white rose nostalgia.

It’s part of a host of new cricket-related sites under the banner of CounterPress, who also have sites such as The Rey at Surrey, The Hawk at Hampshire, The Bear at Warwickshire, King Pears at Worcestershire and, whisper it quietly, Lanky Lanky, from across the M62.

We are grateful that Yorkshire County Cricket Club and several leagues in Yorkshire have been very supportive of the idea but this is and will remain an independent site. If you have a great story that we can cover from within the county, whether male, female, disability or any other form of cricket that relates to the county of Yorkshire, then we’d love to hear from you on editor@whiterosefiles.news.

In Yorkshire, we like to take our cricket seriously but we also love to play, spectate and talk about the game with a smile on our faces. We’ll be reflecting that on White Rose Files.

Who are we?

Editor Jonathan Doidge played league cricket in Yorkshire for over 35 years and has been covering Yorkshire County Cricket Club on and off since 2000. Since 2019, he’s been a regular commentator and correspondent on the club.

He’s also contributed to publications such as Wisden; ESPN Cricinfo and the Cricket Paper. He’ll be sharing the workload with other contributors to White Rose Files, including David Lloyd, aka ‘Bumble’, who will be talking county cricket.

Jonathan also does sports chat events, including on cricket, that help clubs around the county raise much-needed funds to keep grass roots cricket going. In time, we may see those under the ‘WRF’ banner.
