Through Time: When Trueman captained Yorkshire to an innings victory over the Aussies

Bramall Lane, Sheffield was the venue in the summer of 1968 when Yorkshire defeated the touring Australians – the county’s first victory over the Australians since the famous Ashes tour of 1902 - with Fred Trueman leading the Tykes. Graham Orange revisits that match and a great year for the Tykes.

The match took place on June 29, July 1& 2, with Yorkshire completing a victory by an innings & 69 runs at 3.32pm on the final day. In the absence of regular skipper Brian Close, the White Rose county was captained by Fred Trueman.

In hot, humid conditions, on a pitch providing help to both seam and spin bowling, Geoff Boycott and Phil Sharpe provided an excellent opening partnership for Yorkshire, putting on 105 for the first wicket. Boycott top-scored in Yorkshire’s only innings with 86, as the county played purposeful, determined cricket and imposed themselves on the match.

Sharpe (47), Doug Padgett (56) and an unbeaten 69 by Ray Illingworth contributed to Yorkshire’s 355-9 declared. Opening bowler, Graham McKenzie and ‘mystery’ spinner, Johnny Gleeson both took four wickets, with Ian Chappell claiming the other wicket – that of Boycott – caught at the wicket by Brian Taber.
