Another five wickets for fast bowler Olly Stone, giving him 50 in a first-class season for the first time, provided at least some celebration for Nottinghamshire after retaining their Rothesay County Championship became mathematically impossible thanks to Warwickshire’s points haul against Leicestershire at Edgbaston.

The 2025 champions will fancy their chances of ending the season with a victory, leading Yorkshire by 127 with seven second innings wickets in hand, but after Warwickshire collected three batting bonus points to Nottinghamshire’s one, a gap that stood at 15 points at the start of the final round can no longer be closed.
