The first thing to say is that every team is capable of a few off days and one of the joys of sport is its unpredictability. That’s what people say, at least until their team comes out on the wrong end of an upset!
In such times, it’s always tempting to throw the baby out with the bathwater. I put up this message on X at the end of day two and it really was no surprise that it (or rather the team) received a negative response given the state of the match at that point.
In his post-match interview, head coach Anthony McGrath used the word "baffling" and talked about the team’s mentality, suggesting that when they get an opportunity they are sometimes too ‘scared’ to take it (he qualified that by saying it might not be the correct expression).
However, if you watch them all the time, you can see where he’s coming from. Scared may not be correct but it’s more about not backing themselves sometimes because they’re not confident enough in their own abilities. “We’ve got a chance… are we really good enough to win this?” could be a subconscious question in the minds of the players on some occasions. If that’s true, then that also baffles me because they’ve proved that they can beat good teams.
