Constant rain showers and the threat of heavier delayed the regular 2.30pm start in the North East before a 3pm start was planned with no loss of overs.

Captains Hollie Armitage and Lauren Winfield-Hill arrived in the middle for the toss at 2.45pm, only for that to be aborted by more rain.

They did toss up at 3.15pm ahead of a 3.30pm start - 17 overs per side - with Durham skipper Armitage winning it and electing to bowl.

But just as the game was about to start, the rain returned and got heavier.

Umpires Ant Harris and Simon Widdup abandoned the game at 4.35pm.

Durham will be more frustrated at this No Result, with them denied the chance to chase a fifth win in six. Instead, they have to settle for four wins, a defeat and this abandonment. The remain nicely placed in fourth in the table with six games remaining in the race for a top-four finish and Finals Day cricket next month.

For bottom side Yorkshire, these were their first points of the tournament after five successive defeats.

These two sides meet again here next Wednesday in the Metro Bank One-Day Cup.

Durham head coach Dani Hazell said: “It’s disappointing. I think the forecast meant that we’d be taking a chance pretty much throughout the whole day. Mother Cricket gets this one, and we share the points.

“Equally, we end this T20 block in a really positive fashion. We’ve played some really good cricket.

“Even the game we lost, it was a thriller down in London (against Surrey).

“We took some good momentum out of the last two 50-over games that we played.

“Now, this gives us a chance to switch back to that format and make sure that we leave those three games in a good position going into the back end of the season.”

Yorkshire all-rounder Sarah Glenn said: “It’s very frustrating with the rain. But you can't help that, can you. We just have to move on to the next one, which is back here next week in the One-Day Cup.

“I’m really happy to be back (after broken finger). It was pretty nerve-wracking on Friday (against Durham at Headingley). For my first over, I was very nervous. But the girls just helped me relax. After that, I could really enjoy it. It was a shame we lost, but I loved being back out there.

"It was just really bad timing at the start of my Yorkshire career and with a home World Cup coming up. That would have been really special.

“But it’s one those things. Injuries like that are a bit freakish.

“You’ve got to make the most of it, and the positive is that it’s given me a chance to be around with Yorkshire.”
