Overton and Cliff star as vital match remains in the balance

A Craig Overton-inspired Somerset fought back valliantly on day two to leave Yorkshire’s final home game of the season delicately poised. The former England man delivered with bat and ball to prevent Ben Cliff’s greatest day as a county cricketer so far from denting the visitor’s hopes of lifting their first championship title.

Yorkshire 212 all out and 128-6 v Somerset 201 all out, Rothesay County Championship, Day Two

A Craig Overton-inspired Somerset fought back valiantly on day two to leave Yorkshire’s final home game of the season delicately poised. The former England man delivered with bat and ball to prevent Ben Cliff’s greatest day as a county cricketer so far from denting the visitor’s hopes of lifting their first championship title.

The first session saw Overton (64) and Migael Pretorious (58) defy an inspired 8-76 from Cliff to drag Somerset to 201 all out, a deficit of 11 which seemed fanciful after his early three-wicket burst reduced the league leaders to 86-8. By the time the young seamer broke the partnership, they had added a vital 90 runs.
