All-rounder Hill only scored 37 but was a key part of a 58-run stand with Dom Bess for the ninth wicket, as Yorkshire set Hampshire a formidable 278 runs to win.
Having taken a first-innings five-for, Hill broke the deadlock of Hampshire’s innings, before Ben Coad and Adam Lyth’s breakthroughs made the visitors favourites on the final day.
Hampshire will need 172 runs to win, Yorkshire seven wickets. A home victory would leave them a point behind Yorkshire, and safety, whereas the white rose county could build out a 36-point gap on the relegation zone – as the Championship heads towards a thrilling finale.
