Formed in August 1875, Somerset have never been county champions, but have occupied the runners-up spot on six occasions, between 2001 and 2019. They also effectively finished in second spot in the truncated 2020 campaign (due to the Covid-19 pandemic), beaten in the final by Essex for the Bob Willis Trophy. There has also been a trio of third-placed efforts.
Somerset made their County Championship debut in 1891 (one year after the competition was officially formed), finishing joint fifth of nine, although Somerset’s initial first-class match (labelled as ‘Somersetshire’ in Wisden) was in 1882, when they fell to an innings defeat by Lancashire at Old Trafford.
