Both Yorkshire and Hampshire were founded in 1863, although Hampshire didn’t make their County Championship debut until 1895 (The official County Championship began in 1890). The southern county has won the title twice, in 1961 and 1973.
In Hampshire’s inaugural championship campaign, their paths crossed with Yorkshire twice, with the honours shared. Led by the inestimable Lord Hawke, Yorkshire prevailed in the first meeting at Southampton in June by five wickets. The Hon. F.S. (Stanley) Jackson (like Hawke, an England captain), made a significant all-round contribution with both bat and ball for Yorkshire. Hampshire’s captain was a certain Dr. Russell Bencraft, a prominent medical doctor, businessman and philanthropist in Southampton.
