The loneliness of the outfield mower, starring Mark Bailey

The Eight Who Tend The Oval

We're all over Yorkshire cricket on WRF and if you want to tell us more about your club as part of our wider cricketing community, then write to editor@whiterosefiles.news . This week, on the eve of the 2026 league season, we have a groundsman’s-eye view of preparing Ouseburn CC, lovingly penned by Mark Bailey, aka 'Yorkshire Lad'.

If you’d wandered down to the Ouseburn Oval over the past few weeks, you’d have seen eight figures scattered across the ground.

Mowing, marking and occasionally arguing about who should ride the roller.

I’m one of them. More specifically, I’m the one responsible for the outfield lines. The stripe obsessed one. The man on the old Mastiff.

And as we get ready for the first fixture of the 2026 Nidderdale League Division 2 season — Ouseburn 1st XI versus Pannal — the excitement about what might be this season is palbale!
