With the extraordinary events of recent weeks on the international stage, there is sure to be a lot of eyes on English batting all-rounders in the coming years. Yorkshire second XI have one, and his name is Jawad Akhtar. An adaptable batsman and canny off-spinner, the 20-year-old is certainly one for Yorkshire fans to look out for.
Hailing from Pontefract and playing age group cricket at Headingley since the age of ten, Jawad’s development owes a lot to his long-term involvement with Wakefield Thornes Cricket Club. Thornes chairperson Chris Froggett remembers the impact Jawad made on the club from a young age: “Jawad started playing first team cricket when he was maybe 15. It was obvious from an early age that he was a lad with plenty of potential”.
